The War In AfPak Comes To America

The US Gummint wrote a draft of the objectives for the war in Afghanistan and Pakistan. If you do not recall a declaration of war against Pakistan, you are not alone. The good news is that the five stan countries in the former Soviet Union are not on the enemies list. Yet. That we know of.

There are seven objectives for this war. With the exception of number one, there are lists of “metrics”, to be used for measuring progress. There will be a report issued on March 10, 2010, and at regular intervals after that. Rumors that the troops will be home for Christmas are still true, if you mean Christmas 2025.

In the spirit of fun, we have decided to look at these metrics, and apply them to the United States.
Pretend that a foreign power blamed us for a tragedy, and decided to get revenge by killing women and children with unmanned aircraft. No wait, the drone attacks are primarily in Pakistan, the addon to the original Operation Enduring Freedom.
Lets say that the foreigners blamed Mexico for this tragedy, and the war somehow spread north of the Rio Grande. This foreign power…lets call them Zorlock Independent Territory, or ZIT… has a set of metrics for America, and promises to …well they haven’t promised to do anything. Darn those Zorlocks, you just can’t trust them.

Just imagine if these metrics were applied to the USA. We will give each Metric a score, as it would apply to the USA. There are four choices…Yes, we meet the requirement, or No, we don’t. The other two are DNA, or does not apply, and ?, for a fuzzy metric that makes no sense. Remember, this list is a draft, and the final version may make a bit more sense.

Also, there is no third world style insurgency in America today. For purposes of this exercise, we will consider urban gangs to the terrorists and insurgents. The original metrics will be in blue, and the grades will be in purple.

6. Public perception at the district level of the Afghan Government’s effectiveness and sustained ability to provide services
yes
7. Afghanistan’s economic stability and development with emphasis on agriculture

So, there we are, seven objectives, to be measured by 46 metrics. The United States is trying to convert two poor countries, with no democratic traditions, into stable democracies, We are doing this by using our military might. How would The USA score, if the same standards were applied to her? Ten yes, thirty no, four do not apply, and two ?. It looks like the Zorlocks are going to be here a while.

A Plan For AfPak

The BHO regime has released a draft of the objectives for Afghanistan and Pakistan. It looks like we are at war with Pakistan now, declared or not. The entanglements don’t get much more foreign. There is no word on whether we will be greeted as liberators.

Afghanistan was invaded as a knee jerk reaction after 911. This is despite the fact that the temporary pilots were mostly Saudi, and the scheme was planned in Hamburg. The Taliban government appeared to be “harboring” Al Queda, and that was enough justification at the time. Since then, as the war drags into it’s second decade (decayed), new reasons keep popping up. Soon, the action spread into Iraq and Pakistan.

There will be a report made about the progress of the new and improved war on March 10, 2010. These reports will continue “at regular intervals thereafter”. It seems apparent that the United States is going to be in AfPak for a long, long time. This is the outline of the plan.

The goal of the United States is to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat al-Qa’ida in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and to prevent their return to either country in the future.

Objective 1. Disrupt terrorist networks in Afghanistan and especially Pakistan to degrade any ability they have to plan and launch international terrorist attacks.

Objective 2a. Assist efforts to enhance civilian control and stable constitutional government in Pakistan.

Objective 2b. Develop Pakistan’s counterinsurgency (COIN) capabilities; continue to support Pakistan’s efforts to defeat terrorist and insurgent groups.

Objective 2c. Involve the international community more actively to forge an international consensus to stabilize Pakistan.

Objective 3a. Defeat the extremist insurgency, secure the Afghan populace, and develop increasingly self-reliant Afghan security forces that can lead the counterinsurgency and counterterrorism fight with reduced U.S. assistance.

Objective 3b. Promote a more capable, accountable, and effective government in Afghanistan that serves the Afghan people and can eventually function, especially regarding internal security, with limited international support.

Objective 3c. Involve the international community more actively to forge an international consensus to stabilize Afghanistan.

The report has “metrics” that will be used to measure the progress in these seven areas. These landmarks are in this report. Reading them might give you a headache. For anyone with the time and inclination to mischief, it might be fun to take these metrics, apply them to the United States, and see how well we do at what we demand of others.

The Four Agreements

These thoughts are for you to use. . They were articulated by a man named Don Miguel Ruiz. They are called the Four Agreements. HT to activecitizen54.

PG does not claim to live up to these ideals. Number two is especially tough for him. The main thing is to try, and to always do your best. This is not about what you believe or think, it is about what you do.

agreement 1–Be impeccable with your word – Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

agreement 2–Don’t take anything personally – Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

agreement 3–Don’t make assumptions – Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

agreement 4–Always do your best – Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.

Jim And Edna

Jim and Edna were both patients in a mental hospital. One day while they were walking past the hospital swimming pool, Jim suddenly jumped into the deep end.
He sank to the bottom of the pool and stayed there. Edna promptly jumped in to save him. She swam to the bottom and pulled Jim out.

When the Director of Nursing became aware of Edna’s heroic act, she immediately ordered her to be discharged from the hospital, as she now considered her to be mentally stable. When she went to tell End the news she said,

“Edna, I have good news and bad news. The good news is you’re being discharged. Since you were able to rationally respond to a crisis by jumping in and saving the life of another patient, I have concluded that your act displays sound mindedness.

The bad news is that Jim, the patient you saved, hung himself in his bathroom with the belt of his robe right after you saved him. I am so sorry, but he’s dead.”

Edna replied; “He didn’t hang himself. I put him there to dry. How soon can I go home?”

The Health Care debate has gone commando. Instead of focusing on the issues, the various players are running around pointing fingers and screaming racist.
Race is the most effective divide and conquer tactic ever known, at least in America. And the big money players are watching with glee.
Matt Taibbi has a report on the deal that PhRMA has made. PhRMA is the lobbying arm of the pharmaceutical industry. They agreed to support the health care reform, if certain provisions are taken out.
“two important reforms: one, to allow the government to negotiate bulk rates for drugs in Medicare, and the other to permit the importation of cheap drugs from Canada” . In exchange for this concession, PhRMA will support the health care plan with a $150 million ad campaign. Is financial support for the re- election of BHO part of the deal?
Meanwhile, the word on the street is racism. Even smiling Jimmy Carter is playing the game now. When he ran for Governor in 1970, he ran, according to many observers, a racist campaign. Once he got into office, Jimmy was suddenly a moderate, saying the time for segregation is over. Now, money is talking again, and Mr. Carter is helping the divide and conquer tactics of the special interests.

Taibbi says
“Progressives this week are fighting to accumulate the votes needed to stop any health care bill that doesn’t have a public option. Hopefully they can stop this PhRMA payoff as well. If you’ve got a phone, call your congressman and give him/her hell about this…”
PG can only shake his head. His representative in the house is Hank Johnson. Mr. Johnson is talking about the Klan riding horses in the countryside.

The Return Of Cynthia McKinney

PG was talking to his friend Bradley, about the improvement Hank Johnson was over Cynthia McKinney. (Damned by faint praise) PG recalled that at one time, he liked Miss McKinney, but the sepia Lester Maddox (Lesterine?) got old. Little did PG realize how close he was to seeing history repeat itself.

Tuesday, Hank Johnson was talking to a reporter. The subject was Joe Wilson, who blurted out “You Lie” during a speech, by BHO, before congress recently. Mr. Johnson supports a House resolution condemning Mr. Wilson. Mr. Johnson said:
“If I was a betting man, I would say it instigated more racist sentiment, a feeling that it’s OK, you don’t have to bury it now. You can bring it out and talk about it full. I guess we’ll probably have folks putting on white hoods and white uniforms again and riding through the countryside intimidating people. That’s the logical conclusion if this kind of attitude is not rebuked and congressman Wilson represents at least the face of it.”
Sixteen years ago, the right wing gave Bill Clinton hell. They trashed him in much the same manner as the criticism BHO is now facing. And yet, no one said it was racism. It was conservatives being themselves, as petty and obstructionist then as now.

The difference today is that we have a dark skinned President. He is a democrat, and seen by some as a liberal. The right wing propaganda machine is cranking up, just like it did against Bill Clinton.

Because the President has dark skin, this right wing nonsense is labeled racism. Strategically, this may be a bad move for the supporters of the President. It takes focus away from the legitimate differences that people may have with policies, and turns the discussion into a race issue.

PG is represented by Hank Johnson. While his rhetoric may play well in certain circles, it is offensive to PG. There are some serious issues to be faced, and whining about who is a racist is not going to solve them.

Mr. Johnson…who looks a little bit high in that video…might want to move his imagery up to the 21st century. A modern day Klan is not going to go “riding through the countryside intimidating people”. If they try that business in the hood today, they better have bulletproof sheets.

The Video is courtesy of TalkingPointsMemo. The quote is from PeachPundit. Another version of the interview is found at TheHill. Pictures are by PG, taken at the Dragon Con parade.

Ten Different Religions

Those fun lovers at Listverse recently published a feature about “10 extremely weird religions”. This goes along with Hunter S. Thompson’s observation that “when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro”. Back when Chamblee54 was on blogspot, that was the motto here. One day, there was a comment that weird was not spelled wierd. What do you expect from someone quoting Hunter S. Thompson?

Back to the “matter” at hand, people have some strange ways of talking to/about/with G-d. The miracle is that things are not worse than they already are. The dominant religion in our culture is Jesus Worship, and those folks see moderation, in religion, as a sin.

Number Ten is Scientology. If you want a link to them, you can find it yourself, and might also want to look for professional help. Scientology is only included because commenters would be offended. As it is, the comments that PG saw asked about rastafarianism, the flying spaghetti monster, Islam, atheism, and Jesus Worship. The title clearly said that this was a top ten list, and not an encyclopedia. If you want an encyclopedia of religions, try Hinduism.

Nine through Five is pretty boring, as nine to five usually is. There is white supremacy, black supremacy, ufo admirers, burned out hippies, and people who take “Stranger in a Strange Land” too seriously. PG thought that “My Favorite Martian” was the best commentary on that book.

Number four is the Church of the Subgenius. While PG has never officially participated in CotS, he admires the consecration of
slack. If PG can ever get motivated to attend a devival, the world will be a better place.
Number Three is the Prince Philip movement. It seems like the residents of an island somewhere think the Queen’s hubby is a pretty cool dude. It is safe to assume the Princess Diana was not a believer.

Number Two…in more ways than one… is the Church of Euthanasia. It is popular with young people in China. ( Youth in Asia ) Given the popularity of war and capital punishment in the Jesus worship community, the CoE may become very popular. They are based in Boston, MA.

According to the church’s website, the one commandment is “Thou shalt not procreate”. The CoE further asserts four principal pillars: suicide, abortion, cannibalism (”strictly limited to consumption of the already dead”), and sodomy (”any sexual act not intended for procreation”).

The number one spot on this list is sometimes called Nuwaubianism. The travelers on this path do not use that term, preferring “factology”, and numerous other terms. The founder is Dwight York, who is currently in prison.( He is center in the last picture) The Nuwaubs had a facility in Putnam County, Georgia at one time.

The afrocentric beliefs of this group are difficult for outsiders to appreciate. The original post listed eight beliefs, among the man teachings of Mr. York. These three caught PG’s eye:

2. Furthermore, some aborted fetuses survive their abortion to live in the sewers, where they are being gathered and organized to take over the world

5. Women existed for many generations before they invented men through genetic manipulation

8. The Illuminati have nurtured a child, Satan’s son, who was born on 6 June 1966 at the Dakota House on 72nd Street in New York to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis of the Rothschild/Kennedy families. The Pope was present at the birth and performed necromantic ceremonies. The child was raised by former U.S. president Richard Nixon and now lives in Belgium, where it is hooked up bodily to a computer called “The Beast 3M” or “3666.”

Was the Kayne West -Taylor Swift mixup a publicity stunt?

This blog has no evidence, but the circumstances are peculiar. The story, for those under a rock, goes like this. A lady named Taylor Swift wins an award. She is wearing a silver dress. While she is accepting the award, Kayne West comes out of nowhere and says “Beyonce’ had one of the best videos of all time”.

Later in the evening, Beyonce’ gets an award, and calls Miss Swift out to “have her moment”. Miss Swift has changed into a red dress, and appears immediately.

Who had something to gain from this? All the players involved did. Beyonce’ gets her name mentioned a few million times, and gets to play the gracious lady. Taylor Swift gets a big career boost. Being dissed by a black man will give her country fans something to talk about.

As for the Gay Fish…all publicity is good to him. Acting like a jerk is business as usual for him. There are probably a few fans who agree with him, and think what he did was cool. Some people consider Joe Wilson a hero.

A few months ago, Bruno and Emenim cooked up a little stunt for publicity, at an awards show. It got reams of attention for Bruno’s movie, which did not help once people got to see it. With any luck at all, there is no new product from Mr. West in the near future.

PG found a still shot on the video of Taylor Swift in a red dress. It shows someone who looks a lot like Perez Hilton applauding. If that is Mario Laundromat, then that is more evidence that this is a put on.

PG and Uzi decided to brave the traffic and go to the Arts Festival in Piedmont Park. The first step was to find a place to park. They had to drive a bit further down than usual, but a legal looking spot soon appeared.
A few drops of rain appeared. The weather reports had not mentioned rain, but that did not stop the worry. The rain did not last long or hard, and made some nice steam when it hit the pavement.

The artists market held few surprises. The canvas booths lined up on the top of the softball fields, and continued on the north side of the lake. A lady called out for police, saying that a man was harassing her daughter. The man and daughter looked like they just wanted to be somewhere else. PG decided this was a good affair for someone else, and left.

Before long, all the vendors had been visited, and it was time for dinner. PG pulled through Ansley Park, and found a spot to park at Ansley Mall. The space where the Piccadilly cafeteria had been was vacant. The directory said it was there, but the man in the vitamin store said it closed three months ago. It doesn’t seem right.

The Piccadilly on North Druid Hills was open. They did not have white meat fried chicken, and the dining room attendant almost pulled the tray away from PG. This was not appropriate.

Making The Wizard Of Oz

Posted in Uncategorized by chamblee54 on September 13, 2009

002

003

PG read “The Making of The Wizard of Oz” by Aljean Harmetz. The book is copyrighted in 1977, which means a lot more of the players were alive when it was written. As is often the case, the behind the camera story is as interesting as what the public saw at the movies. At this writing the finished movie is 70 years old.

Margaret Hamilton, the wicked witch of the west, writes a foreword. It turns out she saw the makeup department, the soundstage, and the hospital ( She was badly burned in one scene, as was her stand in later). She had no part in the writing, financing, or producing of the film.

MGM was the tiffany studio in the thirties. It was also a place where the producer ran the movie. Auteurs need not apply. The producer of TWOO was Mervyn Leroy, assisted by Arthur Freed. You could write a book just about the role those two played, and someone probably has. The producer was yet another part in the overall machine of the studio.

The entire land of Oz was created on a sound stage. The cost was over two million dollars, which in 1938 was enormous. TWOO was one of the first movies in color,  still an experimental process.

There are many legends about TWOO, some of which the book agrees with. It seems the munchkins were not quite as wild as Judy Garland recalls. In fact, the actors in this book have very different memories than Miss Gumm. They recall her as a happy girl, although  sad about her lost childhood.

TWOO was not successful at first. In it’s first release, it lost an estimated million dollars. It did not become a national institution until it was shown on TV every year. It seems that CBS was bidding on “Gone with the Wind”, and was sold TWOO as a consolation prize. CBS got an option to screen the film annually, and a legend was created.

The book is a gold mine of stories, but we will close this post with one. When making the costume for the Wizard, the staff went to a thrift store, and found the perfect coat. One afternoon, Frank Morgan turned the pocket inside out, and found the words ” L Frank Baum”. Mr. Baum had written the book “The Wizard of Oz”, and the coat had been made for him by a tailor in Chicago.

Nine Eleven Number Nine

It is nine eleven number nine. The first one was the biggie. The next eight have seen various levels of remembrance. Two days (roman numeral II) after 090909, we get 911 number nine. Did the US Government plan that?

Today is the first 911 since the regime change. Mr. Bush gained much political capitol from the attacks, and used it foolishly. America is stuck in two costly wars. America has gone from a budget surplus to a trillion dollar deficit. Mr. Bush dug Mr. Obama a deep hole to climb out of.

The knee jerk reaction to 911 was to go to war. An invasion of Afghanistan was facilitated by “Operation Enduring Freedom” on October 7, 2001. Eight years later, America is stuck. Al Queda and the Taliban exist, as well as other jihad fighters that have not become famous. Pakistan is in danger. Iraq and Iran are allies. America is being bled white by these wars, and cannot withdraw for fear. This is a self inflicted defeat.
The terrorists won.
When PG started this blog, other bloggers liked to tell their 911 stories. A quick glance today says that this custom is fading away. The corporate media is making less noise about 911 now, which is also good. How do you best remember a humiliating disaster?

PG is going to buck the trend, and publish his 911 story for the fourth time. This is written in first person. The company where PG was working no longer exists.

Most of my fellow bloggers are telling their 911 stories. Mine is not that dramatic. I was at work, and someone called out that someone had run a plane into the World Trade Center. I didn’t think much of it, until I heard that the second tower had been hit, then the pentagon, then the towers collapsed, then a plane crashed in Pennsylvania.

I focused on my job most of the day. There was always a lot of melodrama at that facility, and concentrating on my production duties helped to keep me sane. This was roughly the halfway point of my seven year tenure at this place, which featured an unfortunate association with a professional Jesus worshiper. After the extent of the damage became known, he shouted “ They are doing this for Allah” , and prayed at his desk. After seeing just what a hateful loudmouth Jesus created, the spectacle of the PJW praying made me want to puke.

I became alienated from Jesus during these years. Where I had once been tolerant of Christians and Jesus, as one would be with an eccentric relative, I had come to loath the entire affair…and I do not make excuses for Jesus either. I hear of others who found comfort in religion during this difficult time, but that option was simply not available for me.

What Was That Lapel Pin?

BHO made a speech about health care last night. At 24:03, Rep. Joe Wilson ( R-SC) shouted “You Lie”. The President paused, said “that’s not true”, and continued with his address. In the show biz department, it was a landslide win for the President.

The comment before Mr. Wilson’s unveiling was a bit misleading.
“The best example is the claim made not just by radio and cable talk show hosts, but by prominent politicians, that we plan to set up panels of bureaucrats with the power to kill off senior citizens. ” Can we say strawman here? True, the Palins of the nation are just as misleading with the “death panel” talk. The comments by the President were show business politics as usual, not a change we can believe in.
A significant percentage of all health care spending is on terminal patients. Many feel that the emphasis should be on keeping people comfortable, rather than going for the expensive, painful miracle cure. This is just one of many sensitive priority issues that needs to be addressed.

The performance by the President was outstanding during the outburst. He kept his cool, and launched into a bit of red meat politics…the government not paying for abortions… at 24:09 on the clock. We do have a master of style in the White House.

During the campaign, BHO got in trouble for not wearing a flag lapel pin. During his speech, he had a lapel pin, which did not come out clearly in the pictures BHO found. It seemed a bit too narrow to be a flag pin, but it was not clear from the video output.

The State is a South Carolina newspaper. As expected, they reported on this latest embarrassment to the state. They should have quit while they were ahead, after Miss Teen Age South Carolina. One commenter at The State makes an interesting point:

We are missing something here. Joe Wilson shouts, “You lie!” and at that very instant, photographer Chip Somodevilla of Getty Images clicks the shutter. The image is clear, focused, well centered, perfectly timed.

Of the hundreds of people in the chamber, why was Joe in Somodevilla’s crosshairs … unless …

Unless the photographer knew what was coming! Was primed for it! Dialed in on Joe, waited for it — then, bingo! Immortalized the angry gesture that drove home those two angry words: the two words that effectively sabotaged press coverage of the entire speech .. its reason, its substance, its lofty hopes and ideals.

The whole thing thing was a set-up! Joe’s emotions didn’t just “get the better of (him)” as he claimed! He is deliberately bringing tea-bag tactics into the legislative process!
