Richard Spencer was not well known before Inauguration day. He was an alt-right star, who made noise about white nationalism. Mr. Spencer became a national celebrity when he was sucker punched during an interview. Many people label Mr.Spencer “nazi,” and say he deserved it.

‏@machinegunkelly I’m super proud of all my friends walking in the women’s march today. also proud of whoever punched Richard Spencer in the face
@rembert the coward who punched richard spencer needs to come forward and apologize for cutting me in line
@ItsTonyNow the Nazis who spent all year threatening to put people in ovens are now extremely triggered by Richard Spencer getting laid out
@catchdini “Punch them” is, like, Nazi 101, I don’t see the problem here
@KaraCalavera Who said punching Nazis is wrong? Punching Nazis is the most ‘Murican thing one can do. Captain America does it!
facebook: I think punching that nazi was the wrong approach. Should came at him face first with a baseball bat (15 like, 2 love, 1 ha ha)
Fuck Racism, Nazi’s get punched. I thought the picture of Richard Spencer getting punched would make a good hardcore band style shirt.
@20committee Two months ago, Richard Spencer had trouble getting 200 people to attend his “big” DC event. Now he’s a celebrity. Way to go, antifa!

Many onlookers use “nazi” as a label for Mr. Spencer. Apparently, nazis are so odious that public assault is encouraged. (Mr. Spencer “says he is not a Nazi. In an interview on Saturday, he said he was a member of the alt-right, which he calls “identity politics for white Americans and for Europeans around the world.”) The term nazi is usually used to refer to the Nationalist Socialist party, of Third Reich Germany. These “real” nazis were not people that you should mess with. If you hit one in the face, you would probably get a bullet in return. Calling Richard Spencer nazi is a bit of a stretch.

PG saw this, and was horrified. If it is ok to punch nazis today, who is the target tomorrow? Are we a civilized people, or have we descended to the level of der fuhrer? Internet logic (oxymoron alert) did not take kindly to this. @chamblee54 #RichardSpencer it is now OK to hit someone because you disagree with them we are less civilized than we were before @adamd243 Punching Nazis is how we saved civilization before, buddy.

A facebook friend was disturbed by the spectacle. In the comments, someone went full Godwin and produced an alleged Hitler quote. ““Only one thing could have stopped us – if our adversaries had, from the first day, smashed with the utmost brutality the nucleus of our movement.” A reddit thread comes to the consensus that the quote is fake. There was a lovely comment: “I doubt anyone has any real evidence whether he said it or not. Probably not worth taking seriously. If someone has a good point to make, they can make it without quoting historical figures.”

Twitter had a link to an essay, When You Punch A Nazi In The Face, You Punch Me In The Face. The essay said many of the things PG felt. We are a civilized people. When you hit one person, you are also hitting me. The essay was great, until you got to the last line. “Gawken is a satirical publication.”

Some times you just want to give up. Pictures for this commentary on internet badassery are from “The Special Collections and Archives, Georgia State University Library”.
