The B-52s

Posted in Georgia History, Library of Congress, Music by chamblee54 on July 29, 2017

001

There used to be a chinese restaurant, on the Atlanta Highway, called Hunan House. One night, a few people shared a flaming volcano, and formed a band. The b52s played their first show at a valentines day party in 1977. They were named for a bouffant hairstyle.

The b52’s were Ricky Wilson, his sister Cindy, Kate Pierson, Fred Schneider III, and Keith Strickland. The Wilsons and Mr. Strickland were from Athens. Miss Pierson and Mr. Schneider were from New Jersey. Planet Claire was the ancestral home.

Fred had lived in Atlanta before he moved to Athens. He stayed in an apartment on Monroe Drive, across from S&M clutch and brake company. PG knew some of his neighbors, and once rested his feet on a rug, formerly owned by Fred Schneider.

Somebody had connections, and The b52’s were playing shows in New York before long. They released a 45 on db records, “Rock Lobster” and “52 girls”. The first of the girls mentioned…there are only 23 named…is Effie. There was a famous whorehouse in Athens named Effies.

One night, they played a show at the Big Dipper, on Ponce de Leon Avenue. The Big Dipper was a former Maryland Fried Chicken, and is now something else. After the show, either Kate or Cindy was in the parking lot, talking to a local character named Beulah. As was his way, Beulah was talking about Mick Jagger this, Mick Jagger that. Finally, Kate had enough. “Fuck Mick Jagger. One day Mick Jagger will come see me, me, me.”

The b52’s were a fun band. Ricky had an unusual style on guitar, and Kate played a farfisa organ. The girls always wore big hair wigs. Fred was somewhere up front singing.

On Labor Day, 1978, PG saw the b52’s in Piedmont Park. There was a third girl that day, Wendy, who wore an inflatable beach float, and danced. The only songs PG is sure they did were “Downtown” and “Rock Lobster”. A few months later, PG saw the b52’s at the Agora ballroom. The Brains opened.

Sometime in late 1979, the eponymous first album came out. It became a hit, with dance clubs all over playing “Planet Claire”, “Dance this mess around”, and “6060-842”. In the summer of 1980, PG talked with a former Athenian in a hostel in Cannon Beach, Oregon. He mentioned that Cindy was the only heterosexual in the band.

The years went by, and more albums were released. On October 12, 1985, Ricky Wilson died of AIDS. He is buried in Oconee Hill Cemetery, behind Sanford Stadium in Athens. He sold bus tickets at the Greyhound station in downtown Athens before he hit the bigtime.

The band continues to this day. At some point, “Love Shack” was released, and became a hit. It is probably the best known b52’s song today. This is a repost. Pictures are from The Library of Congress.

Incident At The Vortex

Posted in Uncategorized by chamblee54 on July 26, 2017

The Vortex is a bar in Little Five Points. They are famous for commodified counterculture, and the no idiot policy. The entrance is a Moreland Avenue icon.

There was an incident recently. A young lady ate there, and was not happy with the service Instead of leaving a tip, she wrote a note on the reciept. The server’s bf got her name, and left obnoxious messages on facebook. The server was fired, and the bf was banned from The Vortex.

The first PG heard about the incident was an article, Why You Shouldn’t Dine At The Vortex at Little Five Points in Atlanta, Citing Discrimination and Violation of Privacy, posted on facebook. The article was published by Black Lives Matter Greater Atlanta. (Auto start music alert.) The customer, Kristina White, has disowned the BLMGA article. The link above is provided for reference only.

“This article was NOT authorized by me AND I am not affiliated with Black Lives Matter of Greater Atlanta!! Since sharing this story and hearing from another patron that also had a terrible experience with the same waiter, I have determined The Vortex incident to be more of a customer service issue rather than a race issue. The Black Lives Matter of Greater Atlanta organization is no longer associated with the investigation of this case, neither do they have the right to speak on my behalf to media outlets in which they are well aware of. However, Sir Maejor of BLM, continues to circulate MY story (inaccurately may I add) to push his own Agenda!! This has to stop‼️ I’ve been blocked from commenting on the BLM page to address this, but I ask…Please DO NOT share anything from their page regarding this incident!.” UPDATE: The facebook disclaimer has been taken down.

Obviously, leaving harassing messages is not acceptable. However, looking at various accounts of the incident, the only concrete complaint is that some customers got better cups of water than Ms. White. This is from her initial post: “I asked for cold water on this extremely hot day only to get back a smaller cup with no ice unlike the “other” patrons sitting on the outside deck with us. Of course, I sent it back and requested the same cup size with ice as the “other” patrons. He reluctantly exchanged the cups.” The BLMGA account is more sensational.

Customers sometimes have bad service. Servers sometimes have unreasonable customers. This is the food service industry, and it is always going to be like that. Maybe the server was rude to Ms. White. Maybe Ms. White was rude to the server, and he did not react well. However, if the worst thing the server did was give someone else a better glass of water, then maybe Ms. White was being petty. Stiffing a server, because someone else got a bigger glass of water, is not a good look.

Black Lives Matter Greater Atlanta seems to be part of the problem here. The *President and CEO* is Sir Maejor Page aka Tyree Conyers-Page. BLMGA is emphatically not connected to Black Lives Matter, as this radio story indicates: Black Lives Matter Disavows Atlanta ‘President’ Sir Maejor.

THE BLMGA DIFFERENCE “There are over 500 Black Lives Matter Groups out there and six in that State of Georgia. What separates us from the other BLM Groups out there is that we believe in leadership and accountability. We chose not to affiliate ourselves with the national BLM group because we will not center “sexuality and gender” around our organization. We believe it is divisive and counter productive to the movement. We will not put the “LGBTQ AGENDA” before the “BLACK AGENDA” we believe all black lives matter and at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what your sexual orientation or sexual preference is, you are still black.”

The BLMGA version of the incident had a homophobic feel to it. “Gaven’s boyfriend Patrick Wilkinson was sitting on the same patio as Ms. White and observed the whole entire ordeal. While in between servicing paying customers, Gaven and his boyfriend thought it would be appropriate and professional to overly show PDA (Public Display of Affection), this included kissing and fondling each other. Without being concerned that they were completely turning other paying guests off.” Did this really happen? What does that have to do with not getting as big a water cup as other customers? Did this really need to be included in the story? Maybe BLMGA was trying to fire up the readers, by screaming about faggots kissing in public.

Maybe it is related to the story, and we just don’t know all the details. The first three messages were: Msg 1: You shouldn’t go out to a fucking restaurant if you can’t afford to fucking tip. • Msg 2: recognize me? • Msg 2: you’re a piece of shit. The time stamp here is 7:24 pm for Msg 1, and 7:45 pm for Msg 2 and Msg 3. (The time on the receipt is 7:12 pm. This receipt was posted on the initial facebook post by Ms. White.) Just what did Mr. Wilkinson (the bf) mean by “recognize me?”

And the story goes on. The Vortex will endure, serving hamburgers and booze. PG ate there once, and decided that *The Vortex is Bennigans, with a nose ring.* The no idiot policy will be selectively enforced. BLMGA will find more stories to glomm onto. Kristina White, the server, and the servers bf, will go on to new adventures. The spell check suggestions for Maejor are Major and Marjorie. Pictures today are from “The Special Collections and Archives, Georgia State University Library”.

There has never been a performer quite like Tiny Tim.

Herbert Khaury was born April 12 1932, to a Lebanese father and a Polish Jew mother. At an early age, he developed a love of vaudeville style music. He learned to play a ukelele, and began performing in his natural baritone voice.

One night, Mr. Khaury discovered falsetto singing. After trying numerous stage names, he settled on Tiny Tim. He got the attention of Rowan and Martin’s Laugh In, and appeared on that show. Laugh In made Tiny Tim an overnight sensation. He performed “Tip Toe Through The Tulips”.

On December 17, 1969, Tiny Tim married Miss Vickie (Victoria Mae Budinger) on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson. The show attracted an estimated 40 million viewers. Ed McMahon laughed. The couple had a daughter, Tulip Victoria, and divorced after 8 years of marriage.

Tiny Tim continued to perform up until his death November 30, 1996. He had diabetes, and heart problems. As wikipedia tells the tale:
“He continued to play concerts despite the warnings that, due to the fragile state of his heart, he could die at any moment. While playing “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” at a Gala Benefit at The Woman’s Club of Minneapolis on 30 November of that year, he suffered another heart attack on stage. He was led out by his third wife, Susan Marie Gardner (“Miss Sue”, whom he had married on 18 August 1995), who asked him if he was okay. Tim responded, “No, I’m not!”, his final words…He is interred in the mausoleum of Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis.
There is a live website, Remembering Tiny Tim. Under Tiny Trivia, the following items are listed.: 01. Tiny Tim was a devout Christian. 02. Tiny Tim had diabetes. 03. Tiny Tim was 6′ 1′ tall!! 04. One time, when Tiny Tim was staying at Ceasar’s Palace, he decided to have a little fun and order ONE OF EVERYTHING on the menu! 05. Tiny Tim used Eterna 27 by Revlon.06. He also used Jergen’s Body Shampoo.07 He used Vaseline Intensive Care: the yellow bottle for his upper torso and the green bottle for his lower half. 08. Tiny Tim also used Oil of Olay – eight times a day.09. Tiny Tim never ate cheese or meat. 10. Tiny Tim liked to use Viva papertowels after showering in hotels because he didn’t trust the cleanliness of hotel towels. .11. Tiny constantly washed his hands and “creamed” his hands with lotion afterwards. 12. Tiny Tim loved, in this order, #1 pizza, #2 chinese food, #3 popcorn.

This is a repost. Some of the websites quoted in this piece are now “frozen.” Some of the details quoted cannot be verified. Maybe popcorn was number one. Historic pictures for today’s event are from “The Special Collections and Archives, Georgia State University Library”.

Monroe Drive Or Boulevard

It is an Atlanta cliche. Boulevard turns into Monroe Drive because one was black, and the other white. The white people did not want to live on a street with the same name as the black neighborhood. You hear this all the time, with very little explanation. It is plausible. At one time, Ponce de Leon Avenue was a dividing line between the white, and black, neighborhoods. There are, however, a few questions about this name change business. This is a repost.

In the space between I-85 and Dekalb County, there are four streets that change names when they cross Ponce De Leon Avenue. These are Juniper/Courtland, Charles Allen/Parkway, Monroe/Boulevard, and Briarcliff/Moreland. Several streets cross Ponce without changing names, including Spring Street, Peachtree Street, Piedmont Avenue, and North Highland Avenue.

Four thoroughfares are affected by the Ponce rebranding. Juniper/Courtland is mostly commercial, at least south of Ponce. Briarcliff/Moreland is mostly white until you get to the railroad tracks south of Little Five Points. When Moreland Avenue goes under the MARTA line, the neighborhood is Reynoldstown….which was not named for Burt Reynolds.

Charles Allen/Parkway does change from white to black at Ponce. The street name then changes to Jackson Street, the original name, at Highland Avenue. Monroe/Boulevard also goes from white to black at Ponce. However, when you cross the railroad tracks, Boulevard goes through Cabbagetown, a white neighborhood. Boulevard residents change color several times before the road dead ends at the Federal Prison. Oakland Cemetery, and Zoo Atlanta, do not play a role in this drama.

If this litany of street names is boring, it is all right to skip over the text. The pictures today are from “The Special Collections and Archives, Georgia State University Library”.

Roads change names all over the metro area, for a variety of reasons. In the area between Ponce De Leon Avenue and I 20, there are roads that change at railroad tracks (North Highland/Highland, Krog/Estoria.) Others change at Highland Avenue (Parkway/Jackson, Glen Iris/Randolph) or Decatur Street (Hilliard/Grant, Bell/Hill.) Some of these changes are racially motivated, while others are not. Some make sense, while most do not.

No one seems to know when this Monroe/Boulevard thing happened. An 1892 “Bird’s eye view” shows Boulevard sailing off into the horizon, past a racetrack in today’s Piedmont Park. A 1911 map shows Boulevard starting near “L.P. Grant Park,” and sailing past Ponce up to Piedmont Park. A 1940 map shows Boulevard going past Park Drive, only to turn into Monroe Drive at Montgomery Ferry Road. Finally, a 1969 map of “Negro Residential Areas” shows Monroe Drive changing into Boulevard at Ponce De Leon Avenue, like it is today. Boulevard is a stand alone street name at all times.

If anyone knows about this name change business, please leave a comment. It would be interesting to know when these changes were made, and what government agency made them. Google has not been helpful, except for pointing the way to several map collections.

James Baldwin And The Six Letter Word

Posted in History, Library of Congress, Race, Undogegorized by chamblee54 on July 22, 2017

In the spring of 1963, KQED filmed a show, “Take this hammer”, about James Baldwin. The snippet in the video above seems to have been the last three minutes of the show. Here is a transcript. Mr. Baldwin discusses a six letter insult. The n-word is more about the speaker, than the spoken of. A 2010 blogger had this to say.

What resonated with me about this particular video though, is the universal experience we’ve all had being referred to, thought of as, or called something we inherently are not. Not because of something we’ve done, mind you – but because of the way others “interpret” us. Those of us that “transgress” gender norms are often given titles and names that don’t fit who we are – but are more representative of the fears and desires of others. I’ve often felt that people’s projections of me are oftentimes just that – their projections. However, Baldwin’s ending sums up a solution to this perfectly: “But you still think, I gather, that the n****r is necessary. Well he’s unnecessary to me – he must be necessary to you. Well, I’m going to give your problem back to you…you’re the n****r, baby…not me.”

It is now 2017. (All discussions of race must mention the year.) The TV show was fifty four years ago. A few things have changed. To many white people, overt expressions of racism are seen as bad manners. The n-word is taboo in polite company. The overall attitudes may not have changed, but most white people are careful how they say things.

This is a repost. Pictures are from The Library of Congress. These men are Union soldiers, from the War Between the States.

A few weeks ago, this blog published a feature, James Baldwin And The Six Letter Word. At the center was selection of James Baldwin talking about the n word. There was a transcript available, which makes today’s exercise a lot easier.

Mr. Baldwin was discussing this nasty word, and offered an insight into who the user of this nasty word was really talking about. Now, there is another nasty word being casually tossed about these days. This other nasty word is racist. What would happen if you took Mr. Baldwin’s talk, and substituted racist for nasty? It is an interesting way to look at things. What follows is not a perfect fit, and may be offensive to some. A few times, it is very close to the truth.

Who is the racist? Well i know this…and anybody who has tried to live knows this. What you say about somebody else (you know) anybody else, reveals you. What I think of you as being is dictated by my own necessities, my own psychology, my own uhm fears…and desires. I’m not describing you when I talk about you…I’m describing me.

Now, here in this country we got somebody called a racist. It doesn’t in such terms, I beg you to remark, exist in any other country in the world. We have invented the racist. I didn’t invent him, white people invented him. I’ve always known, I had to know by the time I was seventeen years old, what you were describing was not me and what you were afraid of was not me. It had to be something else. You had invented it so it had to be something you were afraid of and you invested me with it.

Now if that’s so, no matter what you’ve done to me I can say to you this, and I mean it…I know you can’t do any more and I’ve got nothing to lose…and I know and I have always known you know and really always..…I have always known that I am not a racist…but if I am not the racist…and if it is true that your invention reveals you…then who is the racist?

I am not the victim here. I know one thing from another. I know that I was born, am gonna suffer and gonna die. And the only way that you can get through life is to know the worst things about it. I know that a person is more important than anything else. Anything else.

I’ve learned this because I’ve had to learn it. But you still think, I gather, that the racist is necessary. Well he’s not necessary to me, so he must be necessary to you. So I give you your problem back. You’re the racist baby, it isn’t me.

@AmadeusAlmighty “Deuteronomy 22:28-29 Leviticus 25:44-46 2 Kings 2:23-25 Genesis 7. Try reading the WHOLE bible before proselytizing about it.” Most arguments about the bible are boring. This one was distinguished by an alliterative twitter handle. PG found himself going down the rabbit hole, and looking up the four passages listed.

Genesis 7 is the story of Noah’s Ark. The thought of what that boat smelled like is enough to make a non-believer gasp for breath. The other three are typical of what might be called the perverted word of g-d, or PWOG. While they don’t have much uplifting value, they can be combined into a poem. A little editing, a few visits to rhyme zone, sacrifice a few brain cells, and, voila, you have a poem.

The poem will be set in 35 point comic sans. The innards will be 0-96-0 green, while the outer layer is 192-192-192 gray. The background pictures will be crowd shots from the Inman Park Festival, taken April 29, 2017. PG was beginning to think those pictures were useless. …

The Mozart of Mathematics is the first background audio distraction for this poem. It is the story of Paul Erdős. He was a Hungarian math genius, who wandered the world solving problems. After a visit to Notre Dame University, he noted the number of plus signs on the campus.

George HW Bush narrowly escaped comrades’ fate of being killed and eaten by Japanese captors. After the story of Paul Erdős, Futility Closet had another story. It seems that Mr. Bush was shot down in the Pacific, and rescued by Americans. Several others on his mission were captured.

“The next day a Japanese officer, Major Sueo Matoba, decided to include American flesh in a sake-fuelled feast he laid on for officers including the commander-in-chief on the island, Gen Yoshio Tachibana. Both men were later tried and executed for war crimes. A Japanese medical orderly who helped the surgeon prepare the ingredients said: “Dr Teraki cut open the chest and took out the liver. I removed a piece of flesh from the flyer’s thigh, weighing about six pounds and measuring four inches wide, about a foot long.

Another crewman, Floyd Hall, met a similar fate. Adml Kinizo Mori, the senior naval officer on Chichi Jima, told the court that Major Matoba brought “a delicacy” to a party at his quarters – a specially prepared dish of Floyd Hall’s liver. “I had it pierced with bamboo sticks and cooked with soy sauce.” They ate it in “very small pieces”, believing it “good medicine for the stomach.”…

David Remnick was the guest on WTF this week. It was a good chat. By turns it was funny, nostalgic, insightful, and full of terror for the America of Donald Trump. Impeachment will not be an easy fix. The Democrats have nobody to replace him. While many people knew about the crookedness, and cheapskate vulgarity, of DJT, the Democrats chose to scream racism. This just might have alienated the 70k voters in PAMIWI that tipped the electoral college. …

Here is the poem, Man Finds A Damsel. The first few words are a handy default title.
man finds a damsel that is a virgin, lie with her they be found upriver
man that lay with her excursion, give her father fifty shekels of silver
she shall be his wife he hath humble fat, thy bondmen thy bondmaids thy children
shall ye buy their families they begat, shall be your possession you gentlemen
ye shall take them as an inheritance, shall not rule over another with sword
mocked go up thou bald head arrogance, he cursed them in the name of the lord …

The Glenn Show was the next audio distraction. This is a Bloggingheads.tv show, featuring @JohnHMcWhorter and @GlennLoury. This show got bogged down in the ongoing debate about race and IQ testing … a subject that bores PG. It wasn’t until 49 minutes had passed before PG felt the need to make a selection. (BHTV has recently gone to a youtube viewer, and has a different method for making clips. The clips are, thankfully, no longer called dingle links.)

At 49:25, Dr. McWhorter said, referring to the election of DJT, “to an extent, it happened because people are tired of being called racist.” This is common sense to PG, and yet, almost nobody is saying this out loud. The Demoze/SJW attitude is one of self righteousness at screaming racist. To many, racism is a metaphysical evil, and when DJT was labelled racist, it was the moral duty of the electorate to vote for Hitlery. There was a twitter comment to this effect: @chamblee54 *racism shaming* is a terrible campaign tactic It is good to hear @JohnHMcWhorter (say) what i have thought.

Dr. Loury proceeded to state that throwing an elected president out, because we think he is an icky person, is a bad idea. The system was created to elect someone, and allow them to serve. Dr. McWhorter disagrees, and thinks that DJT is sooo icky that extraordinary measures are called for. Someone gave a performance of Godwin’s law. He said that the situation in Washington is not as bad as what the German Generals faced when they decided to off Hitler. Dr. Loury talked about the movie “Triumph of the Will,” and make the remarkable admission that he did not know that Leni Riefenstahl was a woman. One more tweet was required, this one including a colorized screen shot of the players. @chamblee54 @JohnHMcWhorter @GlennLoury this reminds me of outrage over jury decisions when justice is not a popularity contest here it is election. …

@HypertrophicLit Dear submitters, Please don’t address subs “Dear sir.” It’s not hard to find out that both our editors who read subs are women. Thank you. H ~ @chamblee54 A gender neutral replacement for sir and ma’am is needed.

When PG was writing this reply, he realized that he did not know how to spell ma’am, despite having said it thousands of times. Google contributes this: “Ma’am is another written form for Madam, which is used to politely or respectfully address a woman. This form of the word can be seen in classical literature including Charles Dickens’ books. Mam is a totally distorted and incorrect form for this word used especially within Indian subcontinent.”

What is the difference between calling someone “Mam” and “Ma’am”? There is a forum topic about the mam/ma’am debate. The bottom line seems to be that it is an informal expression, and that both spellings are correct. PG senses that ma’am looks more correct, and that this is the better written version of this oral expression. …
