About That NYT Article Part Two

Posted in Library of Congress, Race, The Internet, Undogegorized by chamblee54 on November 30, 2017

The NYT article about Tony Hovater got a lot of attention. As other stories become the fascination of the day, Mr. Hovater is fading into unemployed obscurity. This followup feature (here is part one) will look at some of the stupid things that have said about the NYT article. Pictures are from The Library of Congress. If you want to skip over the text, and look at the pictures, you will be forgiven.

Here Are Some Facts and Questions About That Nazi the New York Times Failed to Note takes the prize. “He’s not really named “Tony Hovater.” Like many neo-Nazis and white supremacists, Hovater uses a modified version of his legal name in his racist activities. His real name is William Anthony Hovater, which is the name he’s registered to vote under and which appears on other public records associated with him. It’s unusual for any newspaper, let alone the Times, not to say when their subject isn’t using their real name. A paper that insists on noting Snoop Dogg’s legal name can probably do the same for a Nazi, no?”

What the New York Times’ Nazi Story Left Out Apparently Mr. Hovater is motivated by economics, as much as race. However, Slate never misses a chance to stir the racial stew. Author Jamelle Bouie is especially fond of the word *virulent*, using it six times, always in front of racism/racist. Another Slate feature, The Urgent Reality of Online Extremism, says the NYT article was “deeply fact checked.” The link is to the splinter article referenced above … the one that said Tony Hovater was not the real name of William Anthony Hovater.

@panerabread featured prominently in the NYT. While researching his commentary, PG wondered if Panera had distanced itself from the controversy. The turkey sandwich was no longer available for comment. A google search turned up this exchange. @nytimes The Chemicals in Your Mac and Cheese @panerabread “With us, you can have your mac and feel good about it too.”

@magi_jay twittered a timely tweetstorm about the NYT article. Their comments focused on other things the NYT could have said. “@magi_jay 16/ What are some other things the Times could done? Well they could have interviewed a behavioral scientist on the psychological traits of white supremacists. How they justify their hatred, etc. . . . As well as the tendencies of their white neighbors to look the other way.” @magi_jay does not consider that the NYT article contained 2373 words. This is roughly ten times the length of the typical reader’s patience. If the NYT has done all the things @magi_jay suggested, the article would have become a doorstop novel.

@bessbell “I don’t mean to sound intolerant or coarse, but fuck this Nazi and fuck the gentle, inquisitive tone of this Nazi normalizing barf journalism, and fuck the photographer for not just throwing the camera at this Nazi’s head and laughing.” This is the beginning of another popular twitfest. It was mentioned in the sorry we offended you article, in which the *liberal media* NYT apologizes for allowing Mr. Hovater to live. @bessbell seems to confuse white boy cosplay for the Schutzstaffel. *Nazi* is being trivialized by promiscuous overuse, and will soon mean as much as *racist*, *christian*, or *poopyhead*.

The NYT article about Tony Hovater is past its fifteen minutes. SJW twitter can get their woke jollies listening to I’m Not Racist. #MeToo warriors can sharpen their pitchforks, and wait for the next celebrity to fall from grace. As Roseanne Roseannadanna used to say, It’s Always Something.

About That NYT Article

Posted in Library of Congress, Politics, The Internet, Undogegorized by chamblee54 on November 28, 2017

A Voice of Hate in America’s Heartland is a controversial bit of product placement for Panera Bread. New York Times reporter Richard Fausset goes to smalltown Ohio to meet Tony Hovater. “In 2015, he helped start the Traditionalist Worker Party, one of the extreme right-wing groups that marched in Charlottesville, Va., in August, and again at a “White Lives Matter” rally last month in Tennessee. The group’s stated mission is to “fight for the interests of White Americans.’’

Virtual America is not pleased. Twitter screeds by @magi_jay and @bessbell have been widely shared. This facebook comment speaks for many: “The article serves to humanize and normalize him/far-right extremism/Nazism — which was one of Tony Havater’s stated desires/goals re: his present involvement in the white nationalist/Nazi movement. By normalizing them, they are given a seat at the table of political discourse which is absolutely a back-asswards step.”

When PG sees a tweetstorm like this, his first instinct is to find the original material. Read the article, not what @ShaunKing says about it. When you read the original, you wonder if it is the same article. The original is full of snide references, and logical fallacies. Maybe what the masses want is a ritual denunciation of the anointed poopyhead. As one online publication put it, “ensure that white supremacists and Nazis are thought of and treated the same way you might treat a roach scurrying across a kitchen counter.” Lets look at some quotes from the NYT article.

“Mr. Hovater’s face is narrow and punctuated with sharply peaked eyebrows, like a pair of air quotes, and he tends to deliver his favorite adjective, “edgy,” with a flat affect and maximum sarcastic intent. It is a sort of implicit running assertion that the edges of acceptable American political discourse — edges set by previous generations, like the one that fought the Nazis — are laughable.”

The previous generations of America are a mixed bag. Yes, they fought the Germans in WW2. They also fought Native Americans, and said “the only good Indian is a dead Indian.” “The edges of acceptable American political discourse” once included Jim Crow laws. American political discourse is an ever-changing work in progress.

“After he attended the Charlottesville rally, in which a white nationalist plowed his car into a group of left-wing protesters, killing one of them, Mr. Hovater wrote that he was proud of the comrades who joined him there: “We made history. Hail victory.” In German, “Hail victory” is “Sieg heil.””

James Alex Fields is accused of killing Heather Meyer with a Dodge Challenger. We don’t know if he was acting on orders, where those orders came from, or if he is a loose cannon, acting on his own. While the march organizers certainly bear some responsibility for that tragedy, we do not know the entire story. In any event, that has nothing to do with the German translation of “Hail Victory.” That interjection is a red herring.

I Interviewed a White Nationalist and Fascist. What Was I Left With? was published after the backlash hit. It is a commentary by the author, in which he laments not finding the “rosebud” to this story. There is a revealing quote near the end. “…I saw, on his bookshelf, two volumes of Helena Blavatsky’s “The Secret Doctrine,” 19th-century work of esoteric spiritualism whose anti-Semitism influenced Nazi thinking. But even if I had called Mr. Hovater yet again — even if we had discussed Blavatsky at length, the way we did his ideas about the Federal Reserve Bank — I’m not sure it would have answered the question. What makes a man start fires?”

Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (Еле́на Петро́вна Блава́тская) is a 19th century Russian that few people know about. This obscurity allows Mr. Fausset to fill in the blanks with a gratuitous comment about anti-Semitism. This inclusion also assumes that Mr. Hovater has read the books.

The reference to the Federal Reserve Bank is more telling. If you listen to this podcast, you learn that Mr. Hovater is more concerned with economics than white nationalism. You will also learn that many of his ideas are not well thought out. Mr. Hovater, a former drummer in a heavy metal band, is similar to that libertarian in the break room … the one who will not shut up, and go back to work.

Tony Hovater is a walking, talking illustration of the Dunning-Kruger effect. (The spell check suggestion for Hovater is Overate.) He simply does not know what he is talking about. People who call him a Nazi are missing the point. The Nazis were smart, and tough. Mr. Hovater has his good points, much to the disappointment of sjw-twitter. Unfortunately, he simply is not that smart. The NYT obscures this proud ignorance with snarky comments about Charlottesville, and swastikas.

Saying Tony Hovater is stupid will not satisfy the keyboard warrior. Talking about economics is not as much fun as denouncing the third reich … as if the LARP-tikitorch crowd is the same as the Schutzstaffel. SJW twitter does not like subtlety. This is what they want to hear: “Of course, profiles on the people directly harmed by this hate speech and violence would be much more compelling. But that would require whiteness—white maleness, specifically—to be uncentered. And uncentering whiteness is harder than eating just one Lay’s potato chip, apparently.”

Killed By Police November 26

Posted in Killed By Police, Library of Congress by chamblee54 on November 26, 2017

18 people were killed in the United States last week. The source used is Killed By Police Here are the links: 1060 Chester Randolph Ward 1061 Seth Hardwick 1062 1064 Leopoldo Castaneda-Solis 1065 Nathaniel Harrison Edwards 1066 1067 1070 Lawrence Hawkins 1071 Jacob Paul McCarty 1072 Geronimo Vicente Santos 1073 Matthew Donald Tobin 1074 1075 Jackie Germaine Ragland 1076 1077 1078 Rocky Miles West 1079 Matthew David Borner 1080

4 of the victims were white. (1071, 1072, 1073, 1078) 3 of the victims were black. (1061, 1065, 1075) In 11 cases, the race of the victim was not specified. (1060, 1062, 1064, 1066, 1067, 1070, 1074, 1076, 1077, 1079, 1080) All of the victims, apparently, are male.

5 of the victims fired at an officer. (1060, 1061, 1072, 1073, 1078) 6 of the victims displayed a weapon. (1071, 1074, 1075, 1076, 1077, 1080) 2 of the victims were in involved in a domestic dispute.(1065, 1080) None of the shootings involved a Walmart parking lot.

The Lawrence Hawkins case is considered suspicious. Man Killed by Prichard Officer Was Unarmed “The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office confirms an investigation is underway into a fatal officer involved shooting in Prichard. Mobile Police says the it happened Saturday night at 9:30 during a traffic stop. It happened on First Avenue at Hanes Street. The Sheriff’s Office says Lawrence Hawkins was shot by a Prichard Police Officer. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The sheriff’s office says there is no other further information at this time and more details will be released as the investigation continues. News 5 spoke witnesses about what happened. Latreisha Williams tells News 5 she witnessed the officer follow Lawrence to his house, “He (Hawkins) got out his truck, reached in there to get his cell phone. The police were saying something, and all i heard was pow… pow… pow.” Williams says the officer never turned on his police lights until after he shot Lawrence. Several other witnesses from on the scene tell News 5 the same thing.” (1070)

5 cases are considered noteworthy. Fugitive task force involved in fatal shooting near Hedgesville, W.Va. MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — “The U.S. Marshals Service Mountain State Fugitive Task Force was involved in a “line-of-duty” fatal shooting Thursday near Hedgesville, W.Va., Deputy U.S. Marshal Cole Barnhart said in a statement. The deceased was not identified … The shooting occurred while the agency was attempting to arrest a suspect with a warrant that had been obtained by the West Virginia State Police for armed robbery charges, Barnhart said. … the agency, as a matter of policy, does not release the names of deputy marshals involved in shooting incidents until the conclusion of all investigations.” (1062)

Investigation Underway After Fort Worth Police Vehicle Hits, Kills Pedestrian “Police confirmed Friday evening that one of their units traveling southbound on Hemphill Street hit and killed a man walking across the street. Neighbors near the crash scene say their area is a bigger safety concern. The pedestrian’s body ended up on Fernado Florez’s yard. The victim, ” Leopoldo Castaneda-Solis, “… died at the scene. A cross has been planted on Florez’s yard. He says he is sad about what happened but is not shocked. Florez claims the street lights will be on and then suddenly turn off in the middle of the night. “If I had to go to the store, even just a couple of blocks, I’d call a cab. I’m not crossing the street here because a lot of times these vehicles don’t have their lights on.” (1064)

Death of inmate at county jail under investigation “The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an inmate’s death at the county jail early Friday. Fort Walton Beach police had arrested Nathaniel Harrison Edwards, 31, … shortly after midnight on an outstanding warrant of felony battery-domestic violence, … During a search at the jail, Edwards was caught trying to conceal a plastic bag containing methamphetamine. The Sheriff’s Office then charged him with possession of a controlled substance and smuggling contraband into a detention facility. Edwards became combative about 3:50 a.m. and had to be physically controlled by corrections staff, according to jail officials. Edwards became unresponsive and was taken to North Okaloosa Medical Center in Crestview, where he was pronounced dead.” (1065)

Two dead in stolen pickup after deputies open fire “… Sheriff Manuel Gonzales said the incident started around 3:50 a.m. when the BCSO helicopter spotted a white pickup truck that had been reported stolen. Albuquerque police officers had encountered the truck earlier in the night, but a spokesman did not have any information about it. North Valley-area command deputies responded to the report and tried to stop the truck. “They actually got out ahead of this and deployed a spike belt that was successful in spiking the vehicle,” Gonzales said. But, he said, the truck didn’t stop and instead continued to flee from authorities, driving erratically near Coors and Interstate 40. Deputies performed a “pursuit intervention technique” – in which a cruiser hits a fleeing vehicle to get it to stop – in a nearby neighborhood, and the truck came to a standstill about a quarter mile away on Coors and Glenrio NW. “Subsequently the deputies felt threatened,” Gonzales said. “We don’t know how many shots were fired.” Two people were found dead in the truck, and two people exited safely and were taken into custody, he said. He did not identify the people who were killed and did not know how old they were. He also did not identify the people who were taken into custody. Gonzales did not know why the deputies had felt threatened or if any shots had been fired at them.” (1066/1067)

Officer Involved Shooting in Klamath Falls “Police say earlier in the day at 4:30 p.m. officers and detectives from the Klamath Falls Police Department investigated an attempted murder incident at a home in Klamath Falls. They say during the investigation, officers developed probable cause to arrest the suspect for Attempted Muder, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Burglary in the first degree, Menacing, Assault in the fourth degree, and Reckless Endangering. Police say the suspect fled the residence prior to the arrival of law enforcement. Police say at 9:35 p.m. they contacted the suspect in the 2100 block of Darrow Drive and the shooting happened. The names of the officer and suspect are not being released at this time.” “Matthew David Borner, 52, was wanted on an outstanding felony warrant and suspected of stealing a vehicle when he was contacted by Klamath Falls police officers just after 8:30 a.m., a press release from the district attorney’s office said. A confrontation ensued and Borner was shot by one or more officers. District Attorney Rob Patridge could not say whether Borner had a weapon, or if one was fired, citing the fact that the investigation is ongoing.” (1079)

Whales Of The City

Posted in Book Reports, History, Library of Congress by chamblee54 on November 25, 2017

The plot lines in “Tales of the City” can be tough to figure out. The books have been *coming out* since 1978, which is several lifetimes ago. PG read the first installment, Tales of the City, sometime in the eighties, thought it was fun, and went on about his way. At some point, PG got copies of More Tales of the City and Further Tales of the City, but is not sure if he read them. Significant Others turned up at a yard sale. PG remembers the step grandson rescuing the step grandpa at a radical women’s retreat. Good clean fun.

Babycakes and Sure of You, the last two books of the original series, will be discussed today. It can be tough to make sense of the plot. Michael Tolliver goes from the “Whore of Babylon” to model HIV+ citizen. Mary Ann goes from the naive Ohio girl to a popular TV personality. Mrs. Madrigal is Mrs. Madrigal, and San Francisco is San Francisco.

PG found Babycakes in a box of free books at a faerie gathering. Merry part, merry meat again. BC is set early in the Reagan Presidency. Michael’s bf, Jon, died of AIDS in 1982. Michael goes to England, and runs into an old friend, Mona. It is a complicated, and tough to believe, story. You have to put away your skepticism, and go with the story. It is a good story, and fun to read. This is why PG reads.

Sure of You was the last book of the original series that PG was sure he had not read. The library had it. SOY is set in 1988, and this is a key part of the story. AIDS is running wild. Michael has a pill box with a beeper. Everywhere you turn, men are dead and dying. PG lived his version of 1988 in Georgia.

There were some interviews with Armistead Maupin during this era. He is very angry, and into outing celebrities. The name Tom Selleck was prominently mentioned. This anger shows up in SOY. Michael goes to a black tie reception with Mary Ann. A famous designer, who might be Calvin Klein, hits on Michael. There is an angry lecture about being in the closet. The improbability of Calvin Klein hitting on a plant store owner is not mentioned.

On page 107, the designer’s wife says something to Mary Ann about Ivana Trump. The TV personality wants to know what Mrs. Trump is like in real life. Thirty years later, Ivana Trump is the ex wife/kidsmomma of the President of the United States. Maybe those plots were not as far fetched as what really happens. Shut Up Mrs. Betty Bowers

Posted in Library of Congress, The Internet, Undogegorized by chamblee54 on November 24, 2017

@BettyBowers needs to shut up. They were once funny. Unfortunately, comedians run out of things to make fun of. They start to piss on any target they can find. (Which they is singular, and which they is plural?) If your toes get stepped on, then it is your fault. Sooner or later, the whole thing gets annoying, and it is time for someone more obnoxious.

Hark! NEW VIDEO: Almost 20 Words & Expressions You Need to Humanely Euthanize Now. Glory! was released September 21. It appeared this week on facebook, allowing an unsuspecting PG to wallow in the putrescent glory. The screed features a score of obsolete language. So that you don’t have to watch the video, here they are: literally, actually, classy, voracious reader, alt-right, social justice warriors, antifa, snowflake, safe space, pc, values, patriot, exact same, wheelhouse, #fakenews, blessed, religious freedom, christian.

PG got through five of the forbidden words before his inner snowflake melted. The word was alt-right. Ultra conservatives have been around for years. When PG was a kid, it was the John Birch Society. It is one of the problems with free speech. People are going to say stupid things. With the internet, there are more ways to transmit this nonsense. One solution is to ignore the idiots, and move on.

Mrs. Betty Bowers, America’s Best Christian ranted for a bit about the alt-right. “English (pause) is not body spray to hide your odiousness.(drag out O) Don’t use vague words when precise ones already exist. For example, if you are a rapist, you are not “alt-yes”, you’re (pause, shake finger at camera) a (p,sfac) rapist. (p,sfac) And if you”re a racist, you’re not “alt-right,” you’re (p,sfac) a (p,sfac) racist”(p,sfac.) At this point, PG had to turn the video off. He got a lovely screen shot.

Mrs. Betty Bowers is a character played by Deven Green. “America’s Best Christian” is from Thompson, Manitoba. Yes, this white man, playing an American Christian woman, is Canadian. And they think you’re (p,sfac) a (p,sfac) racist. (p,sfac) Pictures are from The Library of Congress.

Fifty four years ago, John Kennedy went to the oval office in the sky. The bullets hit Mr.Kennedy at 12:30 pm, CST. He arrived at the hospital at 12:37. He had a faint heartbeat on arrival, but quickly succumbed to his wounds.

In Georgia, PG was nine years old. He was in Miss Mckenzie’s fourth grade class. There was going to be an assembly soon, and the class was going to perform. There was a rehearsal in the cafetorium, and some of the kids were acting up. They went back to the class, and PG thought they were going to be chewed out about the misbehavior in the cafetorium. Instead, Miss Mckenzie came into the room, and told the kids that President Kennedy had been shot during a parade in Dallas Texas. She did not say anything about his condition. One kid cheered the news.

School let out at the regular time, and PG walked home. His mother and brother were crying. He was told that the president had died. The cub scouts meeting that afternoon was canceled.

Later that night, a plane arrived in Washington. The tv cameras showed a gruesome looking man walk up to a microphone. He was introduced as President Lyndon Johnson. This may have been the worst moment of that day. Photographs for this repost today are from “Special Collections and Archives, Georgia State University Library”.
