The phrase inoperative statement was coined by Ronald Lewis Ziegler (1939-2003), who, from 20th January 1969 to 9th August 1974, was the White House Press Secretary under President Richard Nixon. During his career as US President Richard Nixon’s press secretary, Ron Ziegler, who has died after a heart attack aged 63, delivered thousands of White House statements. But the only one that reverberates down the years came on April 17 1973, and consisted of two short sentences: “This is the operative statement. The others are inoperative.” ~ @mattaikins Here are the faces of those killed in the last known drone strike of America’s twenty-year war, the latest among thousands of civilian casualties from air strikes, mostly faceless to us. Ungrievable lives, as Judith Butler put it. But we can look into this family’s eyes: a thread ~ The lady from the BBC asked Marianne Faithfull why she had so many boyfriends. “do you know even now how you fell into it all I fell into it all cause I was incredibly beautiful” ~ “in wisconsin at the university of wisconsin in madison it was a big giant round rock where in 1925 one newspaper headline called it a niggerhead and apparently you know calling a big giant piece of something a niggerhead used to be common there’s some other rocks and places that are called that one person in 1925 called it a [ __ ] head and so they’re doing their racial reckoning at the university and somebody dug that up and then a certain cadre of black students decided that that meant that walking past that rock hurt them the idea was not that one person during the coolidge administration called it a [ __ ] head but now it’s [ __ ] head rock that’s what they call” ~ it really is about respect for boundaries, i was usually down for physical contact, but this is different, for the time being, touching should be avoided, unless both parties are comfortable with it, what comes to mind more than that is emotional boundaries, understand that unless i know you well, i am reluctant to talk about religion, politics, and racial attitudes, i should not have to defend my boundaries. If I do not wish to discuss something, then respect that, let me finish what i have to say when you interrupt me, you tell me that you do not respect me, you don’t have to shout, ever ~ pictures today are from The Library of Congress. ~ selah
