I am sitting on the front porch. I am listening to a podcast about Gertrude Stein. It is not kind to the lady. I thought of my friend, who lives in Mexico. He gave me a copy of The Alice B. Toklas Cook Book I sent him a link to the podcast on facebook. Life is good. ~ frisbeemom Lousy Quality Assurance October 11, 2020 How is it possible that they would put a book into an envelope with a torn book cover? Not just a rip but an entire bite out of the front cover! Did they really think that would pass muster? Now I have to return it which is one more inconvenience fit into my work week that I do not need. ~ Capote was of age to serve in WWII. Did he serve, or if not how did he avoid it? –GaeusOctavius 18:00, 7 June 2006 (UTC) Obviously he was rejected for being a homosexual, although I’ve never seen anything written about his gaining a 4F. K5okc (talk) 11:08, 2 September 2014 (UTC) This depends on whether he was open about this at the time he was called to draft. The future Rock Hudson was not prevented from entering the US Navy, granted he came out later in adult life.Cloptonson (talk) 22:40, 7 November 2014 (UTC) This is covered in Chapter 11 of Gerald Clarke’s biography (“Capote”, 1988). While working at the “New Yorker” Capote got his “greetings” (draft notice). When he appeared before the draft board, he said, after only 15 minutes, he was “turned down for everything, including the WACs”. He told a co-worker he had been deemed “too neurotic” for military service. ~ @chamblee54 There was an unsettling moment in your recent show. .@Rhetors_of_York quoted some dead white guy, who said that if remain silent, during times of trouble, then there is a hot place in hell reserved for you, or something similar to that. Someone asked a question about this, and @Rhetors_of_York proceded to ‘splain what he really meant. It seems it was intended for people who could speak up, at relatively little risk to themselves, and make a difference. He referred to tenured professors at high powered universities, which is a tiny tiny percentage of the population. The dwg quote, and ones like it, are used to fire up people, and propel them into action. Often, these well intentioned people don’t know what they are talking about. Their well intentioned speech often causes more harm than good. People who quote dead white guys should keep this in mind. ~ Paula Deen Nine Years Later ~ The one violent protest which has come to my ears was that of a certain Negro whose conversation is heavily sprinkled with the words “darky” and “nigger.” When I suggested to him that he eliminate from his own conversation words which he objected to from he lips of others, a deathly silence came over him and our conversation abruptly died. Soon afterward he remembered that he was already late for an important engagement downtown ~ “The few Southern Negroes who had been exposed to the churchly services of the Anglo-Saxon Protestants were former slaves. These were the elderly and subservient—Uncle Pete and Aunt Mariah and Mamie Beulah—who had been granted the distinction of being called good colored people and thereby permitted to sit in the white-church balcony on Sunday. Even so, admittance to the balcony, which was called n____ heaven by the whites in the early Plantation South, was more by command than by Invitation” ~ “As the author of numerous books I’ve learned in my research that it is not unusual for myths, false statements, half-truths, quasi-truths, exaggerations, distortions, and all sorts of other apocrypha to creep into the public mind. They enter it through the main arteries of communication and its back alleyways and all too often are accepted without question by the public at large.” ~ Vayl Larkin linktr.ee/vayllarkin Instagram: @VaylLarkin Join Vayl & Lee Martinez Soto (El Paso) for an evening of LGBTQIA+ poets, including feature Theresa Davis!
